For most of the people we support, these services are funded through one of Virginia's Developmental Disability Waivers. Which waiver applies, and what a particular plan covers, is set through the individual's waiver assignment and Individual Support Plan rather than by us — our guide to Virginia's DD Waivers explains how Building Independence, FIS and Community Living differ, and who to ask about your own plan.
Both services are delivered where the person already lives, so the practical question is whether we can reach you. We work in Williamsburg, James City County, York County and the surrounding Hampton Roads area — see our service areas for what that means in practice, or start a referral if you already know what you need.
The two services overlap more than they differ. Both are delivered wherever the person already lives, both are shaped by the Individual Support Plan rather than by a fixed program, and both are provided by Direct Support Professionals who work alongside the individual rather than doing things for them.
In-Home Support is usually the right starting point where day-to-day assistance is the main need: routines, personal care, safety, and getting out into the community. Independent Living leans further toward building and holding the skills that let someone run their own household with less help over time.
